Here are some of the items you will need to consider when taking a new puppy home from a shelter or adopting a pup from an outside source. We’ve divided this list into four sections, The first is the list from your general store, the second is a list from your local pet store or super store, the third section is a list of items from your favorite online pet boutique, or better yet, www.TheVelvetSnoot.com, and the last is a list of items you may need from around the house including a “to do” of the basics as a reminder.

The Velvet Snoot carries a huge inventory of affordable elevated dog bowls, dog beds, collars & leads, durable dog toys and sterling silver identification tags, all for small, medium and large breed dogs!

To Do List for New Pets

To Do List for New Pets

General Store Shopping List

__Paper towels for easy cleaning (*or cleaning rags)
__Cotton balls (for ear cleaning)
__Nail board file (for filing young pups nails)
__Brown rice (good source of fiber to tackle diarrhea)

Pet Store Shopping List

__Adjustable nylon dog collar (don’t invest a lot of money on a new dog collar during your puppies first year, they’ll grow out of each new notch from week to week or month to month and may end up chewing it to bits and pieces)
__Stain/Odor neutralizer (I find Gonzo brand cleaner to be the very best. Reasonably priced and super effective)
__Bitter Apple (for preventative chewing on furniture)
__Pooper scooper and pick up bags
__Storage bin for dog food
__Beginners book on owning a dog
__Sign up for puppy’s first training classes
__Dog crate (choose as size large enough for your dog at full sized height and weight and use a divider to adjust to your puppies growing size)
__Doorway gates (baby gates are also an option for safety at stairways and blocking off doorways. Ebay is a great place to buy 2nd hand or reasonably priced gates, you also don’t have to shlepp them home)
__Travel crate for car (you’ll need this for trips to the vet)
__Cheap dog toys (toys you won’t mind being destroyed during your pups destructive chewing stages)
__Puppy shampoo
__Dog ear wash cleaning solution
__Styptic powder
__Puppy grooming brush
__Toothbrushing starter kit
__Pee pee pads (great for smaller breeds and to use during the winter months in extreme weather)

TheVelvetSnoot.com Boutique Checklist For New Pet Owners

__Dog feeding and water bowls (The raised iron doggy feeders are easy to clean, difficult to knock over and super durable)
__Doggy throw for the puppy crate (I like the tiger or leopard throws, they are easy to clean, durable and wear very well over long periods of time with excessive washing)
__Sterling silver identification tag (check out our Silver-Bones tags and have your new dogs name on the front and your cell phone number on the back, just incase your pup gets out of the yard or runs away) Silver i.d. tags last a lifetime and now-a-days cell phone numbers follow us wherever we go.
__6 foot leather leash (I like the Town lead, type “town lead” into search box and choose a 6 foot 3/4″ lead, these leather dog leashes are made incredibly well and will last forever)
__Puppy or small dog sized chew toys
__Dog bed (I like the Jax & Bones beds, they are reasonably priced, durable and so easy to clean. There are so many prints to choose from and later on you can choose an additional cover for a minimal cost)

Around The House Miscellaneous Checklist & To Do List
__Old towels for sleeping in the crate
__Rags to replace paper towels (go green!!)
__Puppy Food (I recommend going to FlintRiver.com and starting your dog on premium all natural puppy food right away, they deliver to your house)
__Choose a veterinarian and make your dogs first appointment for check up and vaccinations
__Start researching obedience training classes. Your local pet super store may offer group classes for a good first step.
__Micro chip your dog and register your current information
